"I Got You Covered"
While in my sophomore year of university using my GI Bill, I was diagnosed with cancer at the local VA which was quite small. This V.A. was not set up to handle my illness, so I was moved to a much larger V.A. 4 hours away.
During those initial days at the larger V.A., I was in and out of consciousness and sleeping a lot. I was initially placed in a room for 4 patients, but they said being that I was the youngest in the VA at that time, 23, and being that they had available room I was placed in another room for 4 but I was the only occupant.
I was attending Univ. out of state so my immediate family was only visiting when they could. My girlfriend at the time was also in school and could not be with me as often as we both would have liked.
One day after waking from one of my naps, I felt something on top of me. I enjoy the cold weather and usually when I sleep, I kick off my covers, so I noticed this heavy feeling right away. I raised my head and at the same time I worked my hand from under the over and what was on top of me was a hand-made quilt. I had never seen this quit before and have no idea how it got there. Neither my family nor the pastor was there that day. So, when the nurse entered to check on me, I inquired about the quilt. She did not know where it came from but did comment that it was very nice. It was about the 3rd or 4th person to enter that gave me a hint of whom it might have been. The nurse said that sometimes Vets receive visits from volunteers whenever they can, could be one of them left it. I never found out for sure who it was, but it kept my mind busy and off my illness for a while. I still have that quilt to this day and that was 43 years ago. I will never forget that act of kindness.
I have partnered up with my old roommate from the service, who, along with his wife, design and produce hand-made quilts. I called this project, “I Got You Covered”.
We receive donations to produce a quilt that will fit a single bed and exhibit various simple patriotic themes then hand them over the social worker at the V.A. who distributes them to Vets in need the same way I initially received mine, anonymously. The project is new and production is slow for my friend makes these in his spare time. So far 7 have been given away, with # 8 in the works. VA staff, Vets, and their families are appreciative when received with smiles and often with tears.
Minimum donation is $60 U.S.D. just to cover material. Labor is donated.
If your heart is speaking to you, then please send your donation to our PayPal account: b521955@hotmail.com.
You may email me at the same address to inform me of your donation.
Once the deposit is received, I will send a confirmation email. Once the quilt is made, I will send a photo of said quilt.
The Vet receiving it will never know who it came from, and you will never know who received it. Just know that it was given to a Vet in need and if it will lift the spirits of just one to know that they know they are not forgotten, then it is well worth it.
I, and the Vets, thank you for your kindness and support.
